Edit common Space Engineers server settings

Most Space Engineers server options live in XML config files. Make a backup first, change one setting at a time, then restart when players are ready.

Important files

  • Instance/SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg for server-level settings.
  • Instance/Saves/<WorldName>/Sandbox_config.sbc for world/gameplay settings.
  • Instance/Saves/<WorldName>/Sandbox.sbc for deeper world data.

How to edit safely

  1. Create a backup.
  2. Open the file in the panel file manager.
  3. Search for the setting name.
  4. Change only the value between the XML tags.
  5. Save the file.

Common settings

Common requests include server name, password, world name, auto-respawn, view distance, sync distance, floating objects, PCU limits, scripts, and backup count.

Restart requirements

Most Space Engineers config changes require a restart. If the server is live, wait until players are clear before restarting or ask VialStack support to schedule the change.
